sudden acute retinal necrosis was caused by newly started immunosuppressive therapy for
rheumatoid arthritis.
Discussion: Based on our case, we would like to draw attention to the importance of
communication between immunologist and ophthalmologist in the case of immunosuppressed
patients. Immunosuppressive therapy may induce or exacerbate toxoplasma retinochoroiditis,
leading to fulminant retinal necrosis and severe visual loss. PCR testing of aqueous humor is
a useful diagnostic tool in patients in whom the serological test is negative or unclear and
toxoplasmosis is suspected based on the clinical picture.
