Results: Between 2012 and 2022 73 children underwent caratarct surgery. 50 were congenital,
9 post traumatic, 8 due to complcations by uveitis, 3 post-vitrectomy due to myopic retinal
detachment, 2 post rhabdomyosarcoma treatment and 1 with mixed mechanism of uveitis,
trauma and vitrectomy due of retinal detachment. The average age was 11.6 years in the non-
congenital group and 5.48 years in the congenital group. 20 children had binocular, 30 children
had monocular cataracts. Surgical intervention was cataract aspiration with posterior
capsulorhexis and anterior vitrectomy. Posterior chamber lens implantation was delayed in 10
cases. 2 patients were left aphakic. A best corrected visual acuity of 1.0 was reached in 8 and
7 cases in the congenital and non-congenital cataract groups respectively.
Discussion: Pediatric cataract surgery both with congenital and non-congenital cataracts is a
challenge even for the well qualified surgens as well. The results depend on the cause of
cataract, the time of surgery and on the accompanying diseases.
