Result: According to our own experience, an intravenous(IV) cannula can be an alternative
solution in preparation of bypass instead of q special, sometimes expensive nasolacrimal stent.
Using an IV cannula we can lead a softer silicone band through the tear points into the lacrimal
duct, and it can also serve as a stent attached to the lacrimal duct from the nasal cavity.
Conclusion: Chronic dacryocystitis can cause persistent lacrimation, recurrent conjunctivitis,
and acute, painful inflammation localized to the lacrimal sac (acute dacryocystitis), which can
also affect the surrounding tissues and lead to the formation of an abscess or phlegmone. In
order to eliminate all these symptoms and prevent complications, DCR surgery is
recommended. Using an IV cannula to prevent restenosis of the ostium is a cost-effective and
affordable solution for nasolacrimal stenting.
