Conclusions: Our results suggest that peripheral neurodegenerative and microvascular
changes may occur without ophthalmoscopic alteration in diabetic patients, and the corneal
subbasal nerve plexus suffers earlier and more severe damage than the retinal capillary
plexus. In vivo confocal microscopy and OCT angiography seems to be an important tool in
monitoring peripheral neuropathy and microvascular damage in diabetic patients.
