Progression of myopia in school-aged children receiving
orthokeratology treatment for at least 2 years during the home

Introduction: Myopia is a major health issue around the world. The World Health Organization estimates that half of the population of
the world may become myopic by the year 2050. The role of both genetic and environmental factors in development of myopia are known. In
the past few years, due to COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions that came with it, school-aged children were confined to their homes,
online courses were offered and the screen time significantly increased. Orthokeratology means wearing gas permeable contact lenses during
the night, so that it reshapes the cornea, thereby corrects refractive errors and provides better visual acuity during the day.
Methods: In this study, we investigated the effect of online education on myopia progression in patients aged 14 to 18 years receiving ortho-
keratology treatment at Department of Ophthalmology, University of Szeged. We checked two periods, from October 2018 to May 2019 and
from October 2020 to May 2021, than a comparison was made between these periods.
Results: The total number of children who are receiving orthokeratology treatment is 160 at our departement. 28 of them met the criteria
of our study, (7 girls and 21 boys). The mean age was 15.85 years for girls and 15.47 years for boys. The children we examined have been
receiving orthokeratology treatment at our clinic for an average of 4.14 ± 2 years. The baseline diopter (calculated in spherical equivalent)
was –2.82 D on the right eye and –2.72 D on the left eye. In fall of 2018, the average diopter was –0.23 D on the right side, –0.12 D on the
left, in spring of 2019 –0.16 D on the right eye and –0.12 D on the left. We measured an average of –0.27 D on the right eye and –0.19 D
on the left eye in fall of 2020, then –0.15 D on the right eye and –0.17 D on the left eye in spring of 2021.
Conclusions: According to the literature, a substantial myopic shift was found during the Covid-19 pandemic due to increased screen time
at home. The findings of this study suggests that orthokeratology is an effective therapeutic option in the treatment of near-sightedness, mo-
reover it may slow down the progression of myopia in children.

3 Debreceni Egyetem Klinikai Központ, Idegsebészeti Tanszék, Debrecen
Célkitűzés: A DE KK Gyermekgyógyászati Intézet Perinatalis Intenzív Centruma (PIC) az intraventricularis haemorrhagia
(IVH) következtében kialakuló posthaemorrhagias hydrocephalus (PHH) miatt idegsebészeti ellátást igénylő koraszülöttek
országos centruma. Az IVH-ban szenvedő koraszülöttek ROP szűrése során a két kórkép lehetséges kapcsolatát vizsgáltuk.
Módszer: Egy PHH miatt kezelt ikerpár neonatológiai és szemészeti státuszának retrospektív áttekintése során a ROP megje-
lenését, lefolyásának jellemzőit elemeztük és vizsgáltuk, hogy hatással lehet-e a ROP lefolyására a PHH miatt hosszabb ideig
            fennálló emelkedett intracranialis nyomás (ICP).
            Eredmények: A 27. gesztációs héten született „A” magzat 1016 g, a „B” magzat 960 g súllyal, sürgős sectioval született. Kopo-
nya UH vizsgálat során az „A” csecsemőnél kétoldali, III. fokú intraventricularis vérzés ábrázolódott. A „B” csecsemőnél bal ol-
dalon IV. stádiumú, jobb oldalon III. stádiumú IVH-t észleltek. Idegsebészeti műtétre – ventriculoperitonealis shunt beülteté-
sére – az „A” csecsemő esetében a postnatalis 9. héten, a „B” csecsemő esetében a 12. héten került sor. A szemészeti szűrés során
az „A” koraszülöttnél ROP nem igazolódott, a „B” koraszülött mindkét szemén ROP zóna 2, st. 3+ miatt lézer kezelés történt.
Következtetés: Eredményeink arra utalnak, hogy a kezelést igénylő súlyos ROP kialakulásának esélyét növelheti a PHH keze-
lését megelőző tartósan jelen lévő emelkedett ICP.

Purpose: The Perinatal Intensive Care Centre (PIC), Institute of Paediatrics at the UD Clinical Center is a national centre for premature
babies requiring neurosurgical care for posthaemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) due to intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH). ROP screening
of preterm infants with IVH was performed and the possible association between the two conditions was investigated.
Method: In a retrospective review of the neonatal and ophthalmological status of a pair of twins treated for PHH, we analysed the
onset and course of ROP and investigated whether prolonged elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) due to PHH might affect the course
            of ROP.
Results: The preterm baby “A” was born with 1016 g, while baby “B” was born with 960 g weight with urgent section, both on the
27th gestation week. Bilateral, III. phase intraventricular haemorrhage could be observed during skull ultrasonography of baby “A”.
There was IVH of III. phase observed on the right and IV. phase on the left side of the gemini baby “B”. Neurosurgery – ventricu-
